Honoring History: Commemorating the 81st Anniversary of Battle of Tarawa, 2024

The early morning of the 22nd of November 2024, marked the commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Battle of Tarawa to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifices of those who fought and lost their lives in one of World War II’s most significant battles. The commemoration event was held at the US Marines Memorial Monument (USMC) on Betio the bloody battlefield of the Battle of Tarawa. The hosting of solemn event was co-funded by the US Government and the Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) under the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industry & Cooperatives (MTCIC).

The Battle of Tarawa, which took place from 20th to 23rd November 1943, was a key turning point in the Pacific theater of the war. The commemoration recognized the sacrifices of over 6,000 lives lost—both Allied forces and Japanese soldiers—and the resilience of the I-Kiribati people who endured the devastation.

The Dawn Service event was attended by the Head of State – His Excellency President Taneti Mamau and his Cabinet Ministers and other important dignitaries including the Japanese Ambassdor, family members of the US Marines and guests. The event was officially opened with a prayer, and garlanding of guests and followed by welcome remarks delivered by an elder from the Betio Betio Unimwane Elders Association. This was followed with a harmonious flag raising of the USA, Japanese, and Kiribati flags by the Kiribati Police Service (KPS) Guard of Honor and the playing of the national anthems delivered by the KPS Brass Band.

The Head of State, HE President Taneti Mamau delivered a compelling speech emphasizing the historical significance of the Battle of Tarawa, the importance of preserving its memory, and the enduring commitment to peace and reconciliation. His Excellency also emphasized the country’s heartfelt call for peace to the world, echoing the brutality of wars and the lessons learned from the Battle of Tarawa. He went on to say that Kiribati will continue to honor its past, and events like this serve as a reminder of the shared history and mutual respect between nations where Kiribati sets an example for Peace.

A moment of silence was also observed after the President’s speech, and it was followed by the laying of wreaths. After the ceremony at the USMC monument, the VIPs and guests moved to the WWII Japanese & Korean monuments located at Takoronga also on Betio where the second part of the commemoration was held to pay respects and lay wreaths for the Japanese & Korean losses and it was soon followed with the serving of breakfast and refreshments.

The Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industry & Cooperatives and the Tourism Authority of Kiribati expressed their gratitude to all who participated, reaffirming their commitment to preserving Kiribati’s historical WWII heritage while promoting the country as a destination where history and peaceful culture converge.

Embracing Kiribati Tradition: Teriaki Canoe Paddling Tournament 2024

The 2nd Teriaki (Te Riaki) Canoe Paddling Competition, held at the scenic beachside of Mary Café Restaurant at Takoronga, Betio on November 23, 2024, was a thrilling showcase of Kiribati’s rich maritime heritage and community spirit. Participants from various government ministries, companies, and diplomatic partners came together, to participate and compete in cultural canoe paddling event.

This event was hosted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Development (MFORD) and organized by a committee from several government ministries, including MISE, MEHR, MCIA, MOE, MTCIC, MFED, MICT, MFAI, and MFORD. Representatives from CPPL, TACL, KFL, ANZ Bank, the Australian High Commission, and the New Zealand High Commission also took part. The Tourism Authority of Kiribati was also part of the organizing committee.

The event was marked by a surge of excitement, with canoes often overturning and racers steering unpredictably. This added to the exhilaration and showcased the skill needed to handle these traditional canoes. In addition, this event not only preserves Kiribati’s maritime traditions but also symbolizes community strength and resilience. Visitors and locals alike are invited to witness and participate in this vibrant celebration of culture and unity.

The winners for this year’s competition were outstanding: the men’s category was claimed by the New Zealand High Commission, the women’s category by the Coastal Fisheries Division of MFORD, and Te Atinimarawa Company in the mixed category.
This event will be held again next year, so mark your calendars for next year’s Teriaki Canoe Paddling Competition. Next year’s competition will mark the third tournament, promising even more excitement and community spirit. The date will be updated after mid-year 2025.

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) proudly welcomes the newly appointed Minister of the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industry & Cooperatives (MTCIC), HN Minister Mrs. Tangariki Reete to her new esteemed role. This marks an exciting chapter for the Ministry and TAK as they continue their collaborative efforts to promote Kiribati as a tourism destination while fostering growth in the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives.

As the driving force behind Kiribati’s tourism sector, TAK is eager to work alongside the new Minister to advance initiatives that showcase Kiribati’s unique cultural heritage, pristine natural beauty, and rich historical sites. With a shared commitment to sustainable tourism development, TAK anticipates that the new leadership will bring innovative perspectives and strategies to elevate Kiribati’s profile on the global stage.

TAK Acting Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Reeti Onorio, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, stating: “We are honored to welcome our new Minister to the MTCIC. A Day in Paradise: MS ‘The World’ Embraces Kiritimati

Kiritimati, Kiribati – Friday, November 29th, 2024, marked a special day for the people of Kiritimati Island as they welcomed MS The World, a luxurious residential cruise ship, to their shores. With 92 residents and 290 crew members onboard, the island was a buzz with excitement and activity.

The day was a resounding success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Kiritimati community. Local artisans showcased their talents with vibrant displays of handcrafted goods, offering visitors a glimpse into the island’s unique culture. The atmosphere was further enlivened by captivating performances from local dance and choir groups, including the mesmerizing YCL Aantaai Pipe Band, whose music filled the air at the landing beach.

A special thanks go to the dedicated tour operators who provided exceptional individual services, ensuring that guests experienced the best of Kiritimati. Their passion for their island home shone through in every interaction.

This visit would not have been possible without the collective effort of all Kiritimati people, church communities, and businesses. Their dedication to maintaining the island’s pristine beauty and welcoming atmosphere is truly commendable. The streets were spotless, the smiles were genuine, and the sense of pride in their home was palpable.

The World’s visit to Kiritimati was a testament to the power of community and the beauty of cultural exchange. Kiribati Celebrates World Tourism Day 2024 to Promote Tourism & Peace in the World

Celebrated annually on September 27, Kiribati had the pleasure to celebrate the World Tourism Day as an important moment to reflect on the impacts of tourism in Kiribati – creating jobs, contributing to economic growth, connecting communities, and reducing poverty. Additionally, tourism encourages cultural exchange, cultural understanding, and social and environmental sustainability, which can help create a more harmonious society in Kiribati and for travel destinations around the world.

This year’s World Tourism Day 2024 theme by UN Tourism is “Tourism and Peace,” highlighting the potential of tourism as a mechanism for positive impacts on global peace. Sustainable tourism practices foster the inclusion of local communities and economies in the tourism sector while preserving natural and cultural resources. This theme resonates deeply with the core values of the Kiribati society, which promotes our friendly & peaceful Kiribati culture and advocates for sustainable tourism practices that protect our natural environment while enriching communities.

The World Tourism Day 2024 event in Kiribati was hosted by the Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) with the celebration held on Betio in the capital South Tarawa (Gilbert Islands group) and by TAK staff on Kiritimati Island in the Line Islands. TAK also invited representatives from the tourism private sector, NGOs, and the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industries & Cooperatives (MTCIC).

The event was officially opened by the Secretary of MTCIC and the Acting CEO of TAK. The event also included the launching of the Climate Friendly Travel program to support sustainable tourism in Kiribati; a presentation of the TAK’s new Licensing Role for 2025; a Presentation on the International Visitors Survey or IVS (Jan -Jun Report 2024) & the Community Attitude Survey (CAS) Report; and a presentation on the new Kiribati tourism customer service program ‘Mauri Way.’ A short video teaser of a new Kiribati destination brand which is yet to be launched this year was also presented during the event. The day’s event was also entertained with traditional dancing and a feast to celebrate World Tourism Day 2024.

The Climate Friendly Travel Programme to Support Sustainable Tourism in Kiribati

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) launched the Climate Friendly Travel program on September 27, 2024, which aligns perfectly with the World Tourism Day theme of “Tourism and Peace.” This initiative is a significant step towards promoting sustainable and responsible tourism in Kiribati.

The Climate Friendly Travel program by SUNx Malta focuses on promoting sustainable tourism practices. By partnering with the Ministry of Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority, they aim to make tourism low-carbon, linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and nature-friendly. Their initiatives include educational programs like Diplomas, Registries, Chapters, Travel Clubs, and various services to encourage behavioural change toward more sustainable travel.

TAK’s officer Ms. Kiarake Karuaki completed the Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) Diploma program on the same day as the launch is a great example of commitment to sustainable tourism. Her expertise will surely contribute to the success of the Climate Friendly Travel initiative in Kiribati.

TAK will be rolling out the Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) program in Kiribati and developing a CFT Action Plan which will be a crucial step in promoting sustainable tourism practices within Kiribati. TAK will also be recruiting members (tourism operators, NGOs, and Government ministries), who be vital in making the Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) program a success in Kiribati. Their participation will help ensure that the initiative is comprehensive and impactful, addressing various aspects of sustainable tourism that contribute to peace in Kiribati.

TAK welcomes Miss Kiribati 2024 as a new ambassador for promoting Kiribati tourism

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati proudly welcomed Miss Kiribati 2024, Ms. Kimberly Tokanang Aromata as the new ambassador for tourism in Kiribati. In her new role, Miss Kiribati will promote the unique beauty and cultural heritage of the islands, helping to raise Kiribati’s profile as a must-visit destination.

To kick off her ambassadorship, Miss Kiribati was given the opportunity to travel to North Tarawa with TAK for a special photo and video session. This initiative is part of a broader effort to capture and showcase the natural wonders and cultural richness of Kiribati, with Miss Kiribati serving as the face of upcoming promotional campaigns.

Her involvement as an ambassador highlights the important role of young leaders in supporting and promoting the growth of tourism in Kiribati, contributing to the nation’s economic and cultural development.

KNSL’s new Fast Ferry provides a new alternative to improve Travel & Tourism in the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati

The Kiribati National Shipping Ltd (KNSL) and the people of Kiribati are delighted with the arrival of MV Tobwaiko, a new fast ferry. The ferry is 15 metres long and 5 metres wide and can carry 50 passengers at a time. The speed of the ferry is supported by its twin jet engines that will run with speeds of 20 to 29knots. The ferry is supplied by Yahama Yachts, a Chinese-based company that builds maritime transportation.

A formal reception for the new fast ferry ‘Tobwaiko’ was hosted by KNSL at the Betio Port on the 7th of August 2024. The name of KNSL fast ferry ‘Tobwaiko’ is inspired by its meaning ‘nuture’ and will serve its purpose of providing fast ferry transportation between Tarawa port and several of the outer islands in the Gilbert Islands group of Kiribati.

On the Tourism side, ‘Tobwaiko’ fast ferry will also significantly support tourism in Kiribati by improving accessibility between islands, providing another alternative quick travel option convenient for both locals and tourists. With faster and more reliable transportation such as Tobwaiko, tourists can explore multiple islands in a shorter time, enhancing their overall experience. This increased connectivity can also help boost local businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, by bringing in more visitors. Additionally, Tobwaiko can help promote lesser-known islands, spreading the economic benefits of tourism and business opportunities more evenly across the country. Overall, it would play a crucial role in making Kiribati a more attractive and accessible destination.

KNSL will prioritize safety and comfort for travelling passengers whilst the ferry will be operated by a well-trained captain and crew of KNSL. On board Tobwaiko there will be restrooms, air conditioning, meal & beverage service, and Starlink internet for passenger convenience and comfort to enjoy travel experience by sea.

TAK conducted tourism awareness to YCL Banana, Kiritimati

On August 24th, 2024, the Tourism Authority of Kiribati was invited to conduct a tourism awareness session for the Youth Christian Living (YCL) group and Sunday School children at the Kiribati Uniting Church (KUC) in Banana, Kiritimati Island. This initiative is part of the YCL’s quarterly program, which focuses on nurturing young people’s relationship with the Lord. In addition to spiritual teachings, the program also invites the Tourism Office to deliver important tourism awareness sessions.

The event was held at the KUC Banana Mwaneaba, where a representative from the Tourism Authority presented to the youth and Sunday School students about the significance of tourism in Kiribati. The presentation emphasized their responsibility in safeguarding and protecting tourism resources and the environment to ensure future economic and socio-cultural benefits. The session was interactive and engaging, with the youth and children actively participating in Q&A discussions about their roles in supporting tourism development in Kiribati.

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati expresses its gratitude to the Minister of KUC Banana and the YCL Advisor for the invitation to conduct this awareness session. This collaboration reflects strong support and teamwork toward achieving the tourism goals outlined in the KV20 vision.

Kiritimati Island Celebrates 45 Years of Kiribati Independence

Kiritimati Island marked its 45th year of independence of Kiribati with a joyous celebration, showcasing the island’s unique culture and community spirit. The festivities spanned several days, featuring events that captivated both residents and visitors alike.

The celebration kicked off with the Inter Pre-School Sports Day, where the island’s youngest athletes showcased their budding talents in a series of friendly competitions. This was followed by a Beauty Contest and Poem Drama, highlighting the children’s creativity and expressions. The Inter Primary School Sports and Quiz provided a platform for older students to demonstrate their athletic prowess and academic knowledge.

Meanwhile, local Sports enthusiasts on Kiritimati Island were treated to a competitive series of knockout matches and finals in volleyball, basketball, and football. The intense competition showcased the island’s passion for sports. The excitement culminated in the crowning of the champions in each sport, solidifying their place in Kiritimati’s Independence Day sporting events.

The celebration continued with a Talent Show, where individuals of all ages took to the stage to display their unique skills and artistic flair. The audience was entertained by a variety of performances, ranging from singing and dancing to magic tricks and comedy routines. The island’s rich cultural heritage was further celebrated through a Local Choir Competition, where groups from different villages competed with their harmonious melodies.

The Kiritimati Beauty Contest captivated the audience with the contestants from across the island showcasing their beauty, intelligence, and cultural pride, competing for the Miss Kiritimati title. The event was a testament to the island’s appreciation for both inner and outer beauty.

The festivities were also marked with a colorful parade March on the 12th of July. The streets of Kiritimati came alive with vibrant floats, energetic dancers, and enthusiastic participants, all celebrating the island’s 45 years of independence. The parade was a fitting tribute to the island’s history, culture, and resilient spirit.
